Theme Camp [Persian Excursion] Backdrop

We needed a new backdrop for our theme camp tent this year, owing to a new structure housing it. Turns out Montana Paints makes an awesome line of spray acrylic paint - plus a dozen different nozzle tips that let you have fatter or thinner spray.

So I got to experiment on my BIGGEST canvas ever (actually a very heavy duty white cloth)!!!

Here it is on the floor, plus what I used for inspiration - I will have better pictures after the burn when I can get shots of it hanging up.

We had such a good time at our fundraiser brunch for the Kwishee-Mahee Art Car selling my earrings, that I got inspired to get wilder with them. I didn't think there would be much market for them, but all of the tame ones stayed on the shelf, while the long, dangly ones LEAPT off them!

This latest pair I made last night I think is going to look very good on the playa (or in the club).

I still have stock if you want a pair, and fundraising pricing will hold through August 19th (50% or more off boutique retail). All proceeds go to funding our Cuttlefish Art Car.

I'm planning to bring my remaining stock to BM for photo-shoots on the playa! I want to see how awesome these look all dusty...

Learning to Frame My Own Work

I have been learning how to make my own float frames for my work. I wanted them to be more professionally presented and "pop" more.

This simple float frame was easy to do with the right tools and patience. I'm hoping to do more "in bulk" since the main time-sink is the setup (and waiting for glue, paint, varnish layers to dry). Doing more frames at once would be more efficient - and let's face it, I'd rather be painting!

No, It's Not Black Henna, It's Jagua!

My yearly Burning Man shipment of fresh, finely sifted powdered henna came in the other day, and with it my first bottle of a new (to me) product called Jagua, which can be applied in a *similar* way to henna - though I found working with it to be a bit different it is still applied with the same little henna-bottle and tips.

Jagua is a safe dye - it is not the dangerous "black henna" we are warned of - which is a black hair dye which should NEVER be put on the skin.

It's from a South American plant, and while expensive, a little seems to go a long way.

This is the design with the gel all peeled and washed off, about 12 hours after applying it in a thin layer. It seems to stain very well even in small amounts so no need to go thick. At first the design looked dark because the gel remained on the skin and the gel itself is a dark indigo color. Later the gel (maybe 30 min after it dried) turned slightly greenish and started peeling off. Underneath was the faintest greeny stain - very pale. It darkened just slightly over the next few hours I was awake and then I went to bed.

NOTE - I think you can peel all the Jagua off once it dries - at least before bed. Though most of the design had peeled away on it's own, what remained DID transfer to other body parts. I think moisture re-awakened the staining capacity of the dried gel here.

When I woke up, the design was DARK. As dark as a real tattoo - darker even than the tattoo my fiance has which is 8 years old, and definitely darker than the gel itself.

I am very excited because I decided to try the Jagua as a way to mock-up additional tattoos he wants me to design, and I thought I might have to go over the design more than once to get a good dark color, but one seemed to be enough.

Now we'll just see how long it lasts and how it fades...

Oh my! This guy was just so cute and forlorn (as any dripping wet cat has the right to be) that I had to paint him. Plus, I had so much fun painting my Aunt's cat, Muffin, and then another cat for a client...that I just had to keep going.

I really do best love the expressions on some of these put-upon cats. The cat portrait for the client was dignified, but Muffin was also captured post-bath and ALSO not very excited about the fact.

I do not officially endorse soaking a cat just to send me adorable shots of forlorn or pissed-off kitty faces...but I won't turn them down either!

Here seen more close-up...I might do a bunch of these and print a set of greeting cards and this would be a good composition for something along those lines.

My first oil painting

So...I've been wanting to try oils for a while since sometimes acrylic dries too quickly to be able to blend and build like I want (especially that one day painting a wedding scene in full sun).

Unwilling to deal with solvents though, I was given a set of these new water-soluble oils, which use no solvents and will thin and clean up with water.

I've had these paints since Christmas, folks, and only picked them up 2 days ago.

What prompted this? Painter's block. Usually ideas pour forth, but not lately, and when I've forced myself to paint (just get back on the horse, right?) the resulting half-finished works have been...miserable.

But...I thought...since I can't paint I might as well just play around with this new-fangled toy...see how they work.

So there I go, working on another one of my car-taken snapshots, this time coming off the Bay Bridge and gazing at my beloved San Francisco with Sutro tower silhouetted against the fading sky.

I won't say the painting process wasn't hard...it was and I had to push through some rough bits and hating my progress. Not because the paint was difficult to work with but just simply because of the blocked creativity I was going through. I have to say though that being able to continue to blend, correct, adjust, try new things and not have my paint dry on me was probably the only reason I made it through to the other side - with, finally, a newly completed painting.

This is a sight that my Mom is more familiar with, having commuted to the East Bay for many years, but I rarely pass over the San Mateo - Hayward bridge anymore, although I grew up not far from it...

On this day I was driving home from an all day meeting and I was so, so tempted pass on the chance to snap some pictures, give into exhaustion and simply drive home. I'm glad I didn't though as this little acrylic is really starting to grow on me.

I've been spending more time on the road at sunset in the last 6 months and when I started snapping pictures I thought it was all in vain - my phone would never pick up the detail I needed to paint from.

Turns out that removing some detail created an opening for me to be more creative and make the painting be what I wanted and not merely a replica of the photograph.

Henna'd Feet

I absolutely love the art and practice of henna. Since I missed Burning Man this year and we had some hot days here in the Bay Area, I decided to henna my Mom for the first time and then I used up the last of my henna supply on my feet (seen here).

I was very impressed with this henna powder. It stained very well in spite of the paste having been from a couple years ago...granted, I kept it frozen that whole time...but I had thought that a year max was how long it would keep, even frozen. The long storage wasn't intentional - I just turned up a lost cone of the stuff I must have forgotten about ages ago.

My beautiful and stunning SALT PONDS series are being shown at B St. Billiards in downtown San Mateo for the next couple months. You are invited and encouraged to come check out some art, play some pool and have a few beers in the swankiest pool hall on the penninsula! B St. Billiards serves beer, wine and some bar-food type snacks. Downtown San Mateo nearby has tons of other restaurants too, all within a few blocks of the pool hall. ALSO nearby is CalTrain (2 blocks).

If you would like to meet the Artist (me), I am planning to be there from 9-11pm Friday, March 12th, and for City-dwellers who want to make a real adventure of it (or just party like it's Friday night) we'll be training down from the City that evening and kicking things off with a little bubbly on the way. I LOVE that you can drink on CalTrain!!!

Here is the tentative schedule:

7:00pm - (for City-dwellers) Meet up at 4th & King CalTrain Station
7:15pm - Buy train tickets and hop on board
7:30pm - Train departs
7:31pm - Pop bubbly...drink bubbly...make the rest of the train jealous...co-opt them into our party...
8:01pm - Disembark train in downtown San Mateo and get a bite to eat. Sushi, Burritos, Ramen, Chinese, Indian...you name it, San Mateo has got it!
8:30pm - (for people who missed the first train) Get ON the train.
8:40pm - Train departs SF...no bubbly though. :(
9:00pm - TO THE POOL HALL!!! Play pool, meet up with non-City-dwellers...see some KICK-Ass art!
9:11pm - Late Train arrives!! All are reunited!!! Meet us at the Pool Hall!
10:25pm - Early-nighters can catch the second-to-last train home to SF.
11:15pm - Oh, crap! Almost time for the last train...say goodbyes and haul ass over to the CalTrain station....make sure you have your ticket!
11:25pm - LAST TRAIN LEAVES for SF!!!
12:01am - The magic moving boxes miraculously deliver us back where we started! Only now we are a lot happier (drunker) and just in time to hit up a hot club in the City.

The Portrait Project begins...

From a photo taken a year or so ago of one of my best friends and staunchest supporters. This is attempt number two at this photo...much more realistic than the first, but still impressionistic. The paints I used in this one helped, I think. They are Activa InterActive Acrylics. I am not total ly sold on them, but, they ARE formulated to stay workable longer (like oils) with the right technique. The longer workability did, I feel, contribute to the more realistic end product as I could fuss with it more...but I found the paint different enough to be annoying at times too.

For instance, I find the paint to be a bit "plastic-y" right out of the tube, and I am partial to really smooth paint (not thick or heavy-bodied stuff). Using a palette that has a special paper over a sponge helped a bit, as does mixing the paint right out of the tube with water or retarder before using it so it's not so thick and unworkable. After doing that, the only real issue I have is that when you pray the painting down to keep it wet and workable...sometimes a big droplet of water falls on a spot...making the paint so delicate and "workable" that a brushstroke takes ALL the paint off that spot, leaving a totally bare circle of white canvas. A bit of a bummer to correct for, personally...
Attempt number one is VERY impressionistic, but I like it's quick and dirty style anyway. These are both really small. No more than 5" tall and 6 or 7" wide...

My little nieceling! Isn't she so cute?! I did this portrait from the picture below. It is the first portrait of anyone I know that I have attempted (other than myself). I have always been afraid to paint anyone I know...what if they think I made them look ugly, or bad, or just unflattering.

I guess I thought I would have to deal with, "You think I look like THAT!?" and feel bad...would they believe me when I said I'm still learning...or would their feelings stay hurt?

Well, little Audree can't talk yet...and by the time she knows this is her she will look totally different and *hopefully* have no problem with it.

Actually, yesterday I painted another person too...an adult! So thanks Audree, for breaking me out of a rut I was in. I think I'll paint all my friends now!

I got such good feedback on the CryingGirl close-up on the eye that I tried another impressionistic close-up here. Still a part of the crying series, it is subtler...can you see the faint streak of blue tears coming down the cheek? Much lighter, emothionally, and more sensual with the focus on the lips and curve of the jaw. The colors too are warmer and softer...the tones imply a turn towards better things.

These are a start on two more crying girls. Emotionally they will most likely fall somewhere between the first 5 intense paintings and the last one, above. Here I will be playing around with texture...these have been covered in a molding medium which will catch at the paint in places and give a slightly different feel to the paint strokes.

This is a very dramatic piece, also a salt pond, but I am not certian if this is a part of the Cargill salts in San Jose, or even elsewhere in the San Francisco Bay Area. It will be stunning, though. Iit deserves to be hung in a space large enough to accomodate viewing from a moderate distance...high up on someone's San Francisco loft wall perhaps?

This mask is coming along well. Here you can see that I have added a new layer of clay - a kind I have never worked with before. Activa Air-Dry Clay. I don't sculpt very much (and even then with cement, not clay) so I can't say what the potential applications of this stuff are......BUT it FEELS AMAZING on the hands!! I can't wait to play with it more.

Perfectionist that I am I could have found hours more of touch up work on this to do, but with a deadline looming....it's DONE!

Everyone love this dyptic, though it's not my favorite per se...I really like Salt Ponds III. The two canvasses are each 28"h 22"w and less than an inch deep. I would suggest hanging them an inch or so apart.

This is the photo I printed out to use for the next in the Salt Pond series. I just learned that the salt ponds will be going away...to be reclaimed for wetlands, I beleive. I hated the idea that Condos would take their place. Though I am glad they are being returned to the enviornment, I will miss their crazy-beauty when flying into SF or San Jose...the bright patchwork-quilt of impossible color from the airplane. They'll still be around for a while, so maybe I can see them in person sometime. I hear 20 years is what it will take to reclaim them. To release all those salts at once would be to kill everything in the bay...

I finished these in time to wear them for Halloween this year. They are for sale, and I have to say, they are EXCELLENT for San Francisco parties. Throw 'em on...instant sexy costume ladies!

The wings are handmade using leather 'feathers.' Layers are alternated between the suede side of the leather and the smooth, shiny side for additional contrast. Mounted on a heavy wire frame/harness, these will fit anybody. The wire is just bendable enough for minor adjustments while still holding shape and being sturdy.

I took special care to keep them tight to the back so that they would not stick out and catch on everything. I was in a very packed crowd, and while the wings did catch a little when shouldering by people, it was quite manageable.

I am NOT a quilter, by any means, so I always find myself slightly amused when working on this. But I had all of these beautiful, beautiful silk scraps begging to be put to use and if there is anything that stimulates my projects ideas, it is amazing materials.

At this point it could turn into a thin blanket OR a comforter cover....and I haven't decided yet to keep it or sell it.

Trying a new technique here. This is with the paint still wet. We'll see what it looks like later today now that the paint has had a chance to dry.

I have re-gesso'd my textured boards...I tried to do warm colors, but I have to face the truth: I like blue better. Besides, I messed up the warm attempt by making the colors too muddy, so I had to start over again anyway.

This last image is the photo I am working off of. I have finished the underpainting (first image) and am now trying to get the colors right...trial and error...and very frustrating at times. A color I mix looks perfect in one light, then completely off in the photo or in a different light!

Crayon, Oil Pastel and India Ink on canvas experiment. I like the turtle I did on plywood better with this technique...the black wash just doesn't take to the canvas as darkly as it did the wood and makes it far less dramatic.

Taken out by the bay on what used to be, years ago, the San Mateo dump and is now a park of sorts.

Started this last summer (at least) and hated it. Accurate compositionally (except for my choice to remove all buildings and telephone wires from the background hills), I decided to rework it some more to see where I can take it. It looks a lot better here in the photo for some reason....
